# Set up LG TVs and LG panels (webOS)

A retail LG TV shows your display software with the Szenera Display app or in its browser. A professional LG panel opens it by itself at power-on. This page explains which of the three ways fits your device, how to set it up, and what does not work by itself afterward.

> **Type:** guide
> **For:** anyone connecting an LG TV or an LG panel as a display
> **Prerequisite:** a TV with webOS 5 or newer or a panel with webOS Signage 6.0 or newer on the network, a free booked seat for a web display, and a computer with portal access
> **Where in the portal:** **Displays** › **Pair display**

## Three ways onto an LG display

| Way | For which device | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| **The Szenera Display app** from the LG Content Store | Retail TVs | Full screen without bars, a waiting page when the network is missing, and the portal recognizes the display as a webOS app. After power-on, you open the app by hand |
| **The browser** of the TV or the **Web Launcher** of a panel, as a web display | every TV and every panel with a suitable browser engine | works without an app. On a TV with the address bar and menus of the browser, on a panel it opens the display software by itself at power-on |
| **The Szenera Display app for LG panels**, through the SI server or a USB stick | professional panels with webOS Signage | the app starts by itself at every power-on, even after a power outage. Screenshot, restart, and schedule from the portal are added later. New and not yet verified on any panel, see [On the LG panel with the app](#on-the-lg-panel-with-the-app) |

> **Caution:** The Szenera Display app is built but is not yet in the LG Content Store. Until it appears there, use the browser route on a retail TV. Ask Szenera support about the status.

You can tell whether a device is a retail TV or a panel in the settings: A panel has a mode that opens a web address at power-on (depending on the version **Simple Web Launcher**, **Web Browser** as the start source, or **SI Server**). A retail TV does not have it.

## With the Szenera Display app

1. On the TV, open the **LG Content Store** and search for **Szenera Display**.
2. Choose **Install**.
3. Open the app. It loads the display software and, after a few seconds, shows a **six-digit pairing code**.
4. Sign in to the portal on a computer and choose **Displays** › **Pair display**.
5. Type in the code. The TV then shows your program.

If the app has lost its storage, for example after the TV was reset, it shows a new code. You get the existing display back without a code:

1. In the portal, on the display, choose **Create a new address** under **Connection and lifecycle** on the **Device** tab.
2. In the app, press **OK** on the remote control five times.
3. Under **Connect address or its code**, enter the address, or only its part from `drc_` on, and choose **Save**.

The same field takes the address that the portal gives out when you create a web display or in the file for many displays. A TV has no address bar to paste it into, and it cannot scan it either.

The app chooses the matching display address by itself. The display software in the app updates itself from the cloud, and the app itself through the LG Content Store.

### What the app can and cannot do

A retail TV gives an app from the LG Content Store little to work with. The app tells the portal exactly that, and what does not work is missing there as a button.

| What | With the app | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Full screen without bars | yes | every app on webOS runs that way |
| Waiting page without network, new attempt by itself | yes | the app keeps its page even if the display software does not load |
| Start after power-on or a power outage | **no** | webOS does not start an app from the store by itself, and no setting on the TV changes that. Open Szenera Display afterward with the remote control. In the device record, the portal shows **Autostart blocked** |
| Switching off the screensaver | **no** | From webOS 6, LG does not let any app switch it off and pauses it only while a movie is running in full screen. How long a picture without a movie stays up depends on the model |
| Screenshot, restart, switching on and off from the portal | **no** | LG gives that only to professional panels, and there only to its partners, see [What is added later](#what-is-added-later) |
| Remote maintenance: system log, updates of the TV, service menu | **no** | remote maintenance exists only on a player. LG updates the TV’s system |

The remote control in the app:

| Key | Effect |
|---|---|
| **Back** | once: a notice. Twice within three seconds: close the app. TVs with webOS 6 to 22 then ask once more whether the app should end |
| **OK** five times within three seconds | the settings of the app: environment, own address, connect code. With the Magic Remote, the same works with five clicks. If your remote control has a red button, it opens the settings as well |

An accidental press of **Back** therefore does not quit the app. Whoever presses it twice in quick succession ends up in the TV’s start menu and then opens Szenera Display again by hand.

## In the TV’s browser or on the panel

Without the app, the display is a web display: The browser opens the display address and keeps it.

### On the TV

1. On the TV, open the **Web Browser** app and type in the **display address** that the portal lists under **Displays** › **Pair display**.
2. The TV shows a six-digit code. Type it into the portal.
3. Bookmark the address. After a power outage, you bring the display software back with it.

In the browser, the same limits apply as for the app, plus the address bar and menus of the browser and no automatic retry without a network. Which settings go with it on the TV is explained under [Platforms: The four settings on the device](/docs/devices/platforms#the-four-settings-on-the-device).

### On the panel with Web Launcher

1. In the settings of the panel, look for the mode that opens a web address at power-on. Label and location vary between versions, but it is always the same function.
2. Enter the display address from the portal, with `https://` and no trailing space.
3. Set the **power-on source** to this mode, otherwise the panel starts in its last source after a power outage.
4. Turn off **screensaver**, **picture shift**, and **automatic shutdown**, as far as the panel allows.
5. Set the **on/off schedule** in the panel. The display software in the browser cannot switch the panel off.
6. Pair the display as above with the code it shows.

### Which address applies

In the browser and on the panel, the browser engine of the webOS version decides, and a device usually keeps it after a firmware update:

| webOS version | Address |
|---|---|
| webOS 22 and newer (TVs from about 2022), webOS Signage 6.1 and newer | the **display address** from the portal (`webplayer.…`) |
| webOS 5 and 6 (TVs from 2020 and 2021), webOS Signage 6.0 | the **TV address**: the display address with `tv.` instead of `webplayer.` at the beginning |
| webOS 4.5 and older | this device cannot run the display software |

A device with webOS 5 or 6 often shows no refusal on the display address, but a white or blank page. Then open the TV address.

> **Caution:** This table is derived from LG’s information about the browser engine and has not yet been checked model by model on the device. The test takes a minute: Open the address, and either the display software starts or the device shows a refusal or a blank page.

## On the LG panel with the app

A professional LG panel with webOS Signage does not install the Szenera Display app from a store but from an address that you enter once at the panel, or from a USB stick. After that, the panel starts the app by itself at every power-on, without a remote control.

> **Caution:** The app for LG panels is new and has not yet been verified on any panel. Ask Szenera support before you set up a panel in operation this way. Until then, the [Web Launcher](#on-the-panel-with-web-launcher) shows your display software without the app.

The app needs **webOS Signage 6.0 or newer**. The version is in the panel’s data sheet. Older panels cannot run the display software.

### Through the SI server

The menus have slightly different names depending on the webOS Signage version, but they always refer to the same settings.

1. With the panel’s remote control, open **Settings** and then **Ez Setting** › **SI Server Setting**.
2. Turn on **Fully Qualified Domain Name** and enter the address of the app: your TV address with `/host/webos/` at the end, so `https://tv.…/host/webos/`. What the TV address is appears under [Which address applies](#which-address-applies).
3. Set **Launch Mode** to **Local** and **Application Type** to **IPK**. Turn **Auto Set** off.
4. Set **Local Application Upgrade** to **Remote** and confirm.
5. Wait until the panel reports **Upgrade complete**. Then turn the panel off and on again.
6. The panel starts the app. After a few seconds, it shows a **six-digit pairing code**. Type it in on the computer in the portal under **Displays** › **Pair display**.

### From the USB stick

For a panel that has no network during setup, or for many panels with the same stick:

1. Format a USB stick with **FAT32**.
2. On the computer, download the app: your TV address with `/host/webos/com.lg.app.signage.ipk` at the end. The browser saves it as `com.lg.app.signage.ipk`.
3. Create a folder `application` on the stick and put the file in it. Do not change its name.
4. Insert the stick into the panel. Under **SI Server Setting**, set **Launch Mode** to **Local**, **Application Type** to **IPK**, and **Local Application Upgrade** to **USB**, and confirm.
5. After **Upgrade complete**, turn the panel off and on again and pair it as above with the code.

### Settings for continuous operation

| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| **Power On Status** | power on | so that the panel comes back on after a power outage and starts the app |
| **No Signal Power Off** | off | otherwise the panel switches itself off after 15 minutes without a signal |
| **No IR Power Off** | off | otherwise the panel switches itself off after four hours without a remote control |
| On/off schedule | according to your opening hours, in the panel | the app cannot switch the panel yet |

Do not change the input on the panel. That quits the app until the next power-on.

### What the app can and cannot do on the panel

| What | On the panel | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Start after power-on or a power outage | yes | the panel starts the app through **Launch Mode** **Local** |
| Stays awake | yes | a panel is built for continuous operation |
| Full screen without bars, waiting page without network | yes | as on the TV |
| **Back** quits the app | no | on the panel, there is nothing for the app to return to. Pressing **OK** five times opens the settings of the app as on the TV |
| Screenshot, restart, switching on and off from the portal | **not yet** | LG releases that only to its partners, see [What is added later](#what-is-added-later) |
| Remote maintenance: system log, updates of the panel, service menu | **no** | remote maintenance exists only on a player. LG updates the panel’s system, and it can be managed with LG’s tools, such as the Control Manager in the browser |

Your display software updates itself from the cloud. The app itself stays until you reinstall it: set **Local Application Upgrade** back to **Remote** under **SI Server Setting**, confirm, and turn the panel off and on again. This is rarely necessary, and Szenera support tells you when.

### What is added later

LG releases the panels’ interfaces only to its partners. With them, the app on the panel gets:

- **Screenshot**, **restart**, and **on and off** from the portal.
- **New versions of the app** without touching the panel.
- **Pairing without a code** with a file on the USB stick.

There is no date for this yet. A panel does not get remote maintenance with system log and service menu even then, because that exists only on a player.

## Check the result

- The display shows your program in full screen, with the app without bars and without a mouse pointer as soon as the remote control is idle.
- In the portal, the display appears under **Displays**. In the device record, it says **webOS app** with its version and **Autostart blocked** for the app on the TV, **webOS app on an LG panel** with its version on the panel, and **Web display** in the browser.
- Briefly unplug the network cable or turn off the Wi-Fi: The display software keeps showing what it has already loaded. With the app, the next start without a network shows a waiting page that keeps trying by itself.

## If something goes wrong

| Symptom | Meaning | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| After power-on, the TV shows a channel or the start menu | webOS does not start the app by itself | open Szenera Display with the remote control, in the browser use the bookmark of the display software |
| The app shows **No internet connection** | The TV has no network | Check the TV’s network. The app keeps trying by itself and reconnects as soon as the network is back |
| The app shows **The display does not respond** | The TV has a network but does not reach the display software | wait a few minutes. If it persists, check the **Environment** in the settings (**OK** five times) and ask support |
| The app shows **This TV is too old for Szenera Display** | webOS 4.5 or older | The device cannot run the display software, see [Which address applies](#which-address-applies) |
| In the browser, the page stays white or blank | The browser engine is too old for the display address | open the TV address, see [Which address applies](#which-address-applies) |
| A new pairing code appears after every start | The TV has cleared the storage of the display software | report it to support, with the model and webOS version of the TV |
| A picture without a movie goes dark after a few minutes or changes into a screensaver | The webOS screensaver | cannot be switched off on a retail TV. For uninterrupted continuous operation, use a panel or a player |
| The panel reports an error when installing the app | The app for LG panels has not yet been verified on any panel | note the model, the webOS Signage version, and the message and report them to support. Until then, use the [Web Launcher](#on-the-panel-with-web-launcher) |
| After power-on, the panel shows an input instead of the app | **Launch Mode** is not set to **Local**, or the input was changed | check **Launch Mode** under **SI Server Setting**, turn the panel off and on again |
| The panel switches itself off after hours | **No Signal Power Off** or **No IR Power Off** is on | turn both off, see [Settings for continuous operation](#settings-for-continuous-operation) |
